On Monday the United Nations released their final report on the success and failures of the Millennial Development Goals. The Millennial Goals was a set of target criteria aimed at improving the lives of the poor around the world. The report stated that the goals helped improve the lives of millions around the world (an estimated six million deaths were avoided simply by installing mosquito nets). However, much of the progress made can be attributed to China, while much of the failures can be attributed to India as it still grapples with extreme poverty. There have been extreme strides made, with the percent of global people living in extreme poverty falling from 47% to 14% since 1990.
