Connecting The Dots #CTD- Race, Power, and Privilege

Police departments around the country attempt to recruit more minority officers in response to recent national outcry about police tactics. However, ‘stop-and-frisk’ practices by NYPD officers, outlawed in 2013 but still practiced, has lead to a disproportionate number of young non-white New Yorkers with misdemeanors on their criminal record, rendering them ineligible for the department. Bill Bratton, NYPD Police Commissioner, helped disband stop-and-frisk but is still an avid supporter of broken windows policy. Broken windows policy supports targeting small and petty crime in order to discourage larger-scale crime later, and this policy often affects young black and Hispanic youth more than other races, further disadvantaging them.
