Today’s Connecting The Dots #CTD: Poverty

Missouri is taking a new approach to food banking, teaching food pantry members how to grow their own food. A number of programs, such as Grow Well Missouri, have sprouted up and travel around Missouri passing out seeds and starter garden kits. Much of what gets handed out at food banks is canned processed food because it keeps for longer. Empowering people to grow their own food will bring fresh produce to food pantries. Gardening gives hungry people a feeling of self-sufficiency that comes regardless of income, and is a welcomed break from much of the food handed out at food pantries. The program has been a huge success, with 90% of people following through and planting their own gardens.  http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/06/26/417725619/missouri-food-pantries-help-clients-grow-their-own-produce
