Connecting the Dots #CTD- Climate Change

Today’s Connecting the Dots #CTD- Climate Change: The global demand for sugarcane as a form of food, fuel, and plastic substitute is increasing. Arising simultaneously is the challenge of meeting the demand sustainably and equitably. Today, 70% of male sugar cane workers in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua are infected by chronic kidney disease and its terminal with victims dying as early as their mid 40’s. Unfortunately, they leave behind their children who haven’t reached an age of self sufficiency. The disease equally plagues thousands of farmworkers in India, Egypt, and the rest of Central America. Suspected causes include chronic dehydration, heavy use and misuse of agrochemicals, and warming working environments from climate change. With improved research in non-communicable diseases, solutions addressing global agricultural demand become clearer.
